REVIEW: PANDORA Bruno the Unicorn Charm
“Be a unicorn in a field of horses.”
Add a whimsical touch to your bracelet with the adorable Bruno the Unicorn!
It has been an exciting year in the world of PANDORA jewellery, with fresh new charms and original concepts. One of the charms that captured the attention of PANDORA fans across the globe, was the sweet Bruno the Unicorn charm which was released as part of the Autumn 2018 collection. Bruno the Unicorn (797609) joins Bella Bot (797141EN160) and Theodore Bear (767236) as part of the PANDORA Family. Future family members will include Cosmo Tommy (797561CZ) and Bobby Bot Dog (797551EN12) making it the cutest family ever!
Dora Explores: PANDORA Bruno the Unicorn Charm
For centuries humans have been fascinated with the idea of mythical creatures and explorers were desperate in their search to discover elusive mermaids and unicorns. Although many years have past, there is still much interest in unicorns despite their imagery changing from an icon of chastity and purity to the radiant, shimmering and sparkling creatures we see today. From 2016 onwards unicorns steadily became more popular, growing into a cultural phenomenon all over the world.
PANDORA previously released a Unicorn Pendant (791200) in their Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, but with 2018 being named the year of the unicorn it was fitting for PANDORA to produce a new unicorn charm, hence Bruno the Unicorn was born!
Like recent charms, the Bruno the Unicorn charm has a shiny polished look with subtle oxidisation around his eyes, nose and muzzle. Unlike the retired PANDORA Unicorn Pendant, which has the structure of a ‘literal’ unicorn, the Bruno the Unicorn charm resembles a soft toy. With his rounded ears and button like eyes, Bruno looks like an adorable plush and it is easy to picture the little hearts beneath his hoofs as pretty pink patches.
As the Bruno the Unicorn charm is based on a cuddly toy there are no sharp edges that could snag your favourite sweater. In fact even Bruno’s horn has a dull point so you will avoid stabbing your wrist too! Bruno’s long flowing mane provides interesting detail at the back of the charm, with his luscious tail neatly curled alongside his body.
PANDORA produce some gorgeous pendant charms, but I prefer modular shaped charms such as the new Bruno the Unicorn charm. Sitting in a similar pose to the Eeyore (791567EN80) charm, Bruno the Unicorn is much larger and is a threaded charm with a lovely chunky feel.
It appears that PANDORA have gradually increased the size of their hallmark as it is larger than hallmarks on older charms. The usual PANDORA hallmark ‘S925 ALE’ is stamped at the bottom of the Bruno the Unicorn charm.
Style 1: Tail As Old As Thyme
'Sometimes we all need a unicorn to believe in. Sometimes we need a unicorn to believe in us.' - Claudia Bakker
'It wouldn't be a unicorn without a horn. That's what the word means! Uni, for one. And then corn for, you know, horn. One-horned.' - Roshani Chokshi, Aru Shah and the End of Time
As the legendary unicorn was first mentioned way back in the 5th century BC, my first styling with the PANDORA Bruno the Unicorn charm is titled ‘Tail As Old As Time’. To create an antique feel I used the pretty Moments Silver Bracelet PANDORA Rose Heart Clasp Bracelet (580719) with a selection of PANDORA Rose charms interspersed throughout the design. Famous fairytales are represented with the sparkling Snow White’s Bird (797166CZ) and comical Seven Dwarfs All Around (797491) charms. If you are fortunate to see a unicorn, a princess is likely to be nearby so we have Cinderella’s Pumpkin Coach (791573CZ) and the Princess Crown (791580CZ) ready for her.
Dance with fairies, ride a unicorn, swim with mermaids, chase your dreams.
PANDORA Rose looks fabulous alongside pretty pink shades and the Magnolia Bloom Clips (792078PCZ) supply a warm, feminine touch. Additional dashes of pink are provided from the PANDORA Rose Pink Shimmer (781650) and Pink Glitter (791670) Murano charms. The marvellous Pink Glitter Murano has recently been retired but there is still available in limited stock for $45 USD at BeCharming.com or £15 at the outlet on the UK PANDORA eStore.
Style 2: Follow The Rainbow
'Be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn, In that case, you should always be a unicorn.' - Elle Lothlorien, Alice in Wonderland.
'I might act like a rhinoceros, but I'm a unicorn' - Nuno Roque
Ask any unicorn what their favourite colour is and they will undoubtably answer, “Rainbow”. With that in mind the second styling with the Bruno the Unicorn charm is a resplendent, multi-coloured design set on the PANDORA Mesh Bracelet (596543). Sprinkled between silver charms, I used Anna’s (791645), Aurora’s (791658), Belle’s (791643), Jasmine’s (791648), Elsa’s (791644) and Cinderella’s Signature Colour (791640) murano charms to form a glittering rainbow. A playful spirit is added to the bracelet with fun charms such as the quirky Ferris Wheel (797199NLCMX) and our sweet android friend Bella Bot (797141EN160) charms. 'Well, now that we have seen each other, if you'll believe in me, I'll believe in you.' - Lewis Carroll
Style 3: Happily Ever After
A friend told me I’m delusional. I almost fell off my unicorn.
'And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.' - Roald Dahl
My third and final styling with the Bruno the Unicorn charm is inspired by a wonderful lesson in positivity found in the movie Despicable Me 3. Adorable Agnes dreams about finding a unicorn and on meeting a bar tender who states he had seen a unicorn Agnes can barely contain her excitement. “You saw a for real, like, unicorn? What did it look like? Did you pet it? Did it smell like candy? Was it FLUFFY?” questioned Agnes. Once the bar man assures her, Agnes goes off in search of a unicorn and finds… a one-horned goat.
Gru worried Agnes would be disappointed to learn her unicorn was a goat and gently tried to explain, “Life is like that, honey. You expect a unicorn but you get a one-horned goat.” Yet Agnes was happy with her one-horned goat and for her he was the best goat in the world!
It’s going to be a rainbow and unicorns kind of day.
Set on the PANDORA Disney Mickey Bracelet (590731CZ), there are no goats or minions on this styling, but it is filled with positivity and the wonder of Disney. At the centre are two souvenirs from my recent trip to Disney World; the PANDORA Disney Parks Mickey Globe and Topiary Mickey Epcot charms. The blue and green colour theme continues with the shimmering Wintry Delight (796357EN63) and luminous Celestial Mosaic (796400MMB) charm. Gorgeous green hues from the Tinker Bell Dress (792138EN93) and the PANDORA Disney Parks Peter Pan charms create balance to the bracelet.
My verdict on the PANDORA Bruno the Unicorn? Legendary!
- Wow Factor - 9/109/10
- Value - 10/1010/10
- Design - 10/1010/10
- Versatility - 9/109/10
This charm is good value as it has a nice amount of silver and a super cute design. However as a themed charm it is not especially versatile and its simple design doesn’t have a big wow factor. For me though, Bruno the Unicorn is a must have and he is going to be a firm favourite from my collection.
