REVIEW: PANDORA Mary Poppins Bag & Umbrella Charms
“Winds in the east, there’s a mist coming in, like something is brewing, about to begin…”
Mary Poppins’ magical accessories will add a dash of eccentric English elegance to your outfit!
As a child, one of my favourite films was the Disney 1964 classic Mary Poppins. Although I hasten to add that I wasn’t born when it was originally released! Hence I was delighted to discovered the release of three Mary Poppins charms in the PANDORA Winter 2018 collection. The three monochrome charms are based on Mary Poppins’ trademark accessories and the iconic silhouette of Mary flying beneath her marvellous umbrella. My favourites of the three charms are the PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins Umbrella Pendant (797507CZ) and the PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins Bag Charm (797506). The PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins Silhouette Charm (797510ENMX) is still on my wish list for the future.
Dora Explores: PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins’ Bag Charms
When I first saw low resolution images of the PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins Bag Charm (797506) it appeared to have a pavé finished with cubic zirconia stones. However when I inspected the high quality stock images I was delighted to discover a stunning, cubic zirconia free charm! I’m sure long time collector’s will agree with me that this charm is the epitome of PANDORA at it’s best. An intricate floral pattern covers Mary’s carpet bag, the design is lifted beautifully with oxidisation detail. Just like Mary’s actual bag, PANDORA Mary Poppins Bag Charm looks as if it’s filled with unexpected items!
More treats can be located beneath the PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins Bag Charm. The marvellous Mary Poppins is anything but ordinary and so it is only appropriate that PANDORA have produced a splendid design engraved with Mary’s name. Either side of the ornate title are the standard PANDORA hallmarks ‘S925’ and ‘ALE’.
There is such expert craftsmanship on the Mary Poppins Bag Charm that it appears as if the bag’s handles can be lifted and the clasp opened. Both the ‘PANDORA’ and ‘©Disney’ hallmarks are stamped on two of the leather straps. My only wish is that PANDORA could have created this charm with a hinge and made it openable like the Free As A Bird Pendant (797575CZ). That would have been incredible!
Interestingly, despite being a large and solid charm, the PANDORA Mary Poppins Bag Charm has a smooth core. This has made me wonder if PANDORA will produce more unthreaded charms in the future.
Dora Explores: PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins’ Umbrella Pendant Charm
The PANDORA Mary Poppins Umbrella Charm is a fantastic rendering of Mary’s brilliant brolly! Mary’s umbrella is as unconventional as she is and it’s not just a practical accessory in case of rain, but also her preferred method of travel. Wonderful details such as the talking parrot handle and Mary’s Practically Perfect Measuring Tape are all complete on this fabulous charm.
The front of the tape measure is engraved with Mary’s pretty nameplate in her signature handwriting. This hangs separately to the black enamel umbrella, and swings next to the handle. Like many other PANDORA pendants, the PANDORA Disney Mary Poppins Umbrella Charm (797507CZ) features a slender silver bale set with clear cubic zirconia stones. Although I think it is quite pretty, I enjoy to see more creative uses for the space, such as the beautifully engraved ‘Tinker Bell’ on the Disney Tinker Bell’s Dress Pendant (792138EN93). One side of the bale is engraved with the typical ‘PANDORA’ and ‘S925 ALE’ hallmark, while ‘©Disney’ is stamped on the other side.
Along with the quirky storyline, extraordinary bag and magical umbrella, I have always adored the songs from Disney’s Mary Poppins. Each time I hear one of the melodies, I’m filled with a lovely warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia. Consequently, I chose three favourite songs from the film as a theme for each styling with the Mary Poppins Umbrella (797507CZ) and Bag (797506) charms.
Style 1: Feed The Birds
'Feed the birds, tuppence a bag, Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag' - Disney, Mary Poppins
'Mary Poppins was very vain and liked to look her best. Indeed, she was quite sure that she never looked anything else.' - P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins
First, the ‘Feed the Birds’ styling, is set on the PANDORA Rose Heart Clasp Bracelet (580719) to lend a vintage feel. Additionally, the beautiful copper shade of PANDORA Rose echoes the tuppence coin that it costs to feed the birds! And the PANDORA Rose Pink Intertwining Radiance (781968PCZ), Darling Daisy Meadow (780004EN12) Open Your Heart (780964), Shimmering Heart (781241CZ) and Two Hearts Spacers (786559CZR) are scattered like spent tuppence coins throughout the design.
As regular readers know, I am partial to symmetrical designs. Thus the Mary Poppins Umbrella Pendant swings at the centre and the pretty Forest Trinity (791214PE) and Free As A Bird (797575CZ) pendants fly either side. The peridot stone from the Forest Trinity pendant perfectly compliments the olive tones on the Wildflower Murano (791638CZ) charms. Other gorgeous green stones sparkle and shimmer from the retired Wise Owl (791211CZ) and Peacock (791227MCZ) charms. Also waiting for their turn to be fed are the Snow White’s Bird (797166CZ), Majestic Swan (791732CZ) and Spring Bird House (797045) charms. Amongst the birds, the white enamel flowers on the Darling Daisy Meadow Clips (791494EN12) perfectly suit the floral design from Mary Poppins’ Bag.
'She’s saying it! She’s saying it! cried Jane, holding tight to herself for fear she would break in two with delight. And she was saying it. The Bird Woman was there and she was saying it: Feed the Birds, Tuppence a Bag! Feed the Birds, Tuppence a Bag!' - P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins
Style 2: Spoonful of Sugar
A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, The medicine go down-wown, The medicine go down, Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, In a most delightful way! - Disney, Mary Poppins
'The honey bee that fetch the nectar, From the flowers to the comb, Never tire of ever buzzing to and fro, Because they take a little nip, From every flower that they sip, And hence, They find, Their task is not a grind.' - Disney, Mary Poppins
The second design ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’ is set on the retired PANDORA Oxidised Moments Bracelet (590702OX). Just as sugar helps the medicine go down, subtle drops of gold sweeten the dark oxidisation. Once again, as with the previous style, the Mary Poppins Umbrella Pendant hangs centre. At either side the PANDORA Shine Queen Bee (367075EN16) and 14k Gold Heart (750809D) pendants adorn the bracelet. Also providing sweet touches of gold are the two tone Dragonflies (790898), Tree of Life (790429) and He Loves Me (790541D) charms. Gold sprinkles the sugary nectar of the Lazy Daisy Clips (791014) and Bouquet Safety Chain (790864). Meanwhile, Mary Poppins the quintessential Englishwoman settles down with her carpet bag for a nice cup of tea from the Enchanted Tea Pot (797065CZ) and a freshly baked Cupcake (790417).
'Then Barbara had her share, and she gurgled and licked the spoon twice. Mary Poppins then poured out another dose and solemnly took it herself. Rum punch, she said, smacking her lips and corking the bottle.' - P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins
Style 3: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
'Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even though the sound of it, Is something quite atrocious, If you say it loud enough, You'll always sound precocious, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!' - Disney, Mary Poppins
'So when the cat has got your tongue, There's no need for dismay, Just summon up this word, And then you've got a lot to say.' - Disney, Mary Poppins
Especially compared to my two previous designs, my final styling might appear a little crazy! But what else would you expect from the title Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? Filled with the flavour of this magnificent word this colourful look is set on the Mickey Moments Bracelet (590731CZ). Mary takes centre stage with her bag at her side and umbrella swinging in the middle and Jiminy Cricket (797492EN41) plays the role of her cheeky friend Bert. Opposite, the Disney Parks Flying Dumbo (792124ENMX) and Carrousel (792125) charms illustrate the films fun merry-go-round scene. The Ferris Wheel (797199NLCMX) and Alice in a Teacup (792126ENMX) charms also reflect the enjoyable park scene. Finally, the Figaro Portrait (797488EN16) charm portrays the cat who has your tongue, when you need to summon up the word, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
'Mary Poppins sighed with pleasure, however, when she saw three of herself, each wearing a blue coat with silver buttons and a blue hat to match. She thought it was such a lovely sight that she wished there had been a dozen of her or even thirty. The more Mary Poppins the better.' - P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins
My verdict on the PANDORA Mary Poppins' Bag & Umbrella Charms? Practically perfect in every way!

The PANDORA Mary Poppins’ Bag and Umbrella Charms receive a well earned 10/10 from me! Both have are eye catching and have a splendid design. Some may argue that the Mary Poppins’ Bag is overpriced for a plain silver charm but it is a larger charm well worthy of the price. As shown in the three very different stylings the charms are also very versatile. Altogether I am absolutely delighted with both pieces and fully recommend them.
